Quartetto Poesía y Clave combines music and poetry (Quartet of Poetry and Rhythm) in Spanish and English to create programs of broad cultural impact. The program presents the poetry of the Cuban poet Eliseo Diego, performed with songs that knew and loved during his life. Calling the program Eliseo Diego and the Music that Accompanied Him, or in Spanish, Eliseo Diego y la música que lo acompañó, the performance includes poems recited both in the original Spanish language and in English translation, with explanations and background in English, so that listeners can enjoy both languages. The music is understood by all: the romantic songs and melodies by some of Cuba’s best composers, who were skilled in both the European and folk traditions. Included are the great Ernesto Lecuona (Cuba’s Gershwin), Sanchez de Fuentes, who wrote the beautiful “Bayamesa,” and the multi-talented and marvelous songwriter, composer, and performer Paquito D’Rivera.
Performers Overview:
Brenda Feliciano – voice
Carolyn Ramirez-Steinberg - flute
Sergio Garcia-Marruz - guitar
Chacho Ramirez - percussion
Washington Post Music critic Tim Page wrote of Ms. Feliciano, “She has a strong, opulent soprano voice, a fervent and welcome intensity, and the ability to meld the blues into popular music without slighting the integrity of either discipline.”
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel critic Tom Strini wrote, “The pinnacle of it was the famous love duet, “Bess, You is My Woman Now,” with Feliciano singing Bess…Scorching mezzo Brenda Feliciano sang the lush orchestral arrangements of “ Summertime” and “My Man’s Gone Now.”
The Heritage Celebration Series is a way to promote the messages in the museum by highlighting the legacies of the 1960s. The decade of the Sixties saw a tremendous rise in people’s pride in their cultural identity, and we want to celebrate the celebration of diversity arising from that trend. This series is a way to showcase different cultures through music and performance, a great way to connect the museum with the performing arts. Museum admission not included with Heritage Celebration Series admission ticket.
