Field Trip Grant Information
target field trip grants
Bethel Woods Center for the Arts understands that teachers and administrators in our area are struggling to fund field trips due to rising costs and declining budgets. Target Corporation's generous 2008 Field Trip Grants Program will provide 5,000 more opportunities for students nationwide to explore more of the world outside the classroom, including visits to Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. Grants for field trips to museums, cultural institutions and other events or activities away from the school facility are available in amounts up to $800 through the Target Field Grant Program.
Established in 2006, the Target Field Grants program awarded a total of $1.6 million to fund 1,600 field trips nationwide last year, and this school year the company expects to award up to $4 million. This program gives local educators an important opportunity to offset the effect rising costs and budget cuts will have on field trips this year. Bethel Woods Center for the Arts is taking this opportunity to promote this program in our community, and encourages teachers and administrators to apply for the Target Field Grant program and plan a visit to the museum this school year. The 2009 grant cycle for trips scheduled between February 2009 and the end of the school year has closed.

All educators, teachers and principals wishing to plan a field trip for students are eligible to apply. Applicants must provide a brief description (no more than 2,000 words) of the field trip and its benefits, as well as a breakdown of expenses. Funds may be used to cover field-trip related costs such as transportation, ticket fees, resource materials and supplies. Other criteria for selection of grant recipients include the field trip's tie-in to the school's curriculum and the number of students who will be involved.
The museum's education staff developed the following language which may be used by educators when applying for a grant to visit The Museum at Bethel Woods:
Located in Sullivan County, New York, The Museum at Bethel Woods is dedicated to improving the quality of life for local residents. As a world-class facility in the heart of an underserved area, the museum can provide tremendous opportunities to local students who otherwise do not have exposure to many cultural or educational resources.
The Museum at Bethel Woods provides students with an understanding of the scope of recent history by interpreting the story of the 1960s and the Woodstock Music and Art Fair. School programs support teachers and engage students through interactive and thought-provoking explorations of history. All school programs meet the Learning Standards for New York State and can be modified to accommodate other states as well.
The education staff at the museum supports the greater mission of Bethel Woods Center for the Arts by interpreting, expanding and promoting the values and messages put forth in the museum. Using the exhibitions and collections as a platform for educational programs that serve visitors of all ages, the education staff seeks to connect messages and themes of the past with today’s audiences in an effort to foster a spirit of tolerance and appreciation for diversity and to promote public awareness and involvement.
A school program at the museum begins with pre-visit materials provided by the museum. These materials and recommended post-visit activities allow teachers to more fully incorporate a trip to the museum into their curricula. During the museum visit, professionally trained educators lead students through an interactive session that involves small group collaboration and hands-on activities. Recognizing that education develops through experience, the staff encourages students to become active in the learning process as they collect, analyze and reinterpret information. While all school programs support New York State learning standards, the ultimate goal of the programs is to help students make connections with the past in order to become empowered citizens of tomorrow.
